Poetry Pleases: Huddersfield

Gwen Drewery pays tribute in verse to her home town.

Oh little town of Huddersfield
How safe and snug you lie
With stalwart Pennine Hills your shield
Where moorland meets the sky.

Oh Huddersfield, your roots go deep
Into the distant past
Ghosts of de Lacys their watch keep
While Woodsome Hall shall last.

Your arms spread wide, dear Huddersfield,
Embracing field and dell.
Though famed afar for worsted yarn
You have scenery as well.

From far-flung highway in the sky
The lorries thunder through
Their massive loads, piled wide and high,
Shake buildings old and new.

Your landmark high stands on a hill
Near village, church, old school,
And when your factories are still,
Song is the golden rule.

So, little town of Huddersfield,
Though far your natives roam,
Your ties hold fast in hearts concealed.
With pride they call you ‘Home’.
