U3A Writing: Useful Information
Open Writing is eager to run poems and articles by members of University of the Third Age writing groups.
Here Maggie Smith, national organiser of the UK U3A's Creative Writing Network gives some useful information about her organisation.
As you will see in the list of contents over on the right-hand side of this page, Maggie now has her own section in Open Writing. From time to time she will be posting news and information of vital interest to the hundreds of U3A writing groups in Britain - and to the thousands of enthusiastic U3A writers.
The U3A's Creative Writing Network is one of 42 individual subject networks run by the organisation in Britain.
The aim of the networks is to assist U3A tutors - all of whom are volunteers - and to improve the learning experience of U3A students.
The Creative Writing Network offers a quarterly newsletter which contains ideas from U3A writing groups around the country, articles by U3A writers, a list of useful Web sites, and more besides.
One copy of the newsletter is provided free to each writing group. The next edition is due out next month.
The Network also organises national study days around the country. The most recent of these was held this month in Harrogate.
Membership of the Network is free. Groups wishing to join should contact Maggie Smith, the national organiser, at
Please include in your application: name, address, e-mail address, phone number.
Maggie also wishes to point out that the national U3A Resource Centre has a stock of useful leaflets, videos and other material. Check it out on the national U3A Web site in the sections on Resource Centre and Subject Network.
