Poetry Pleases: Spaces Between

This very special love poem was written by Jane Williams for her husband.

You are the space between.
The drawn air in every breath,
The bridge spanning each small birth and death.
You are that hiatus before hand touches satin skin,
The hesitation between wilt thou? and I will.
That whisper between love’s premiss
And its consummation.

You are the lull before the storm,
You are the truce we keep until
The parentheses between no and yes.
You are the gap I walk through without taking hurt,
The necessary freeboard of my boat,
The hush of shingle as the roaring wave drags back,
The flash before the thunder.

You are the empty quarter, silence and light.
The brink, the chasm’s edge at which I hesitate.
You are the leap I take.
