Poetry Pleases: Early Influences

Elaine Day thinks back to her school days and wonders whether they really were carefree.

Think back to carefree schooldays,
But were these really so?
The stress of taking my exams
To find out what I know.
The discipline was very strict
I had to toe the line,
Winter months I played lacrosse
In weather foul or fine.
Team spirit was encouraged -
"You must support your house!"
This either made you stronger
Or rather like a mouse.
Did this form my character?
No, this was done at home,
Secure in my parents' love
And yet allowed to roam.
Together with my siblings
I learned to care and share
Often did the cry go up,
"Oh, no, that is not fair!"
Now I'm in the U.3.A.,
An age when you look back
Knowledge gained throughout the years
To keep me on the track.
