Kiwi Konexions: A Poem
What is a poem? Glen Taylor ruminates entertainingly while searching for an answer to that question in this poem about a poem.
Last period of the day,
Bored, restless,
No more words to say.
Draw a picture on your paper.
Fill it with words.
Tree, Tree, Tree,
Sea, Sea, Sea.
Colour it in.
What is a poem?
Sonnets of Shakespeare.
The rhyme, metre and scan
Of Lakeland poets.
“A host of golden daffodils”.
Angry words against war,
Injustice, hate.
“Man’s inhumanity to man.”
Registers of joy and pain,
Of love and rejection.
Great moments recorded.
Rites of passage observed.
Or, lying on a grassy bank,
The picture of a dew drop
On a blade of grass.
A butterfly, a hawk on high,
Jet streams in the sky,
Taking people where?
Playing with words,
Delving into dictionary and lexicon.
Or recording thoughts, emotions,
With or without rhyme.
What is a poem?
The bell rings.
Cut it out.
Take it home.
Stick it on mum’s fridge.
