Poetry Pleases: Almondbury Players (1971-1996)
Brian Jenkinson writes a requiem for a local amateur dramatic group.
Come, chant the dirge with muffled drums,
The Players are no more;
The curtain’s down, the lights are out,
No more the loud “Encore”.
Just think of all the lives we’ve lived,
The many parts we’ve played --
The soldier, vicar, gardener,
The dowager, the maid.
In farce and comedy we’ve chased
Each other round the stage;
We’ve realised we’ve repeated speeches
From a different page.
Sometimes a piece of scenery
Has come off in our hand,
And other things have not turned out
The way that we had planned.
But now we’ve hung our costumes up,
The make-up’s packed away,
And there is just one other thing
That I should like to say:
When we think back with pleasure to
Performances bygone,
We thank those who’ve supported us
Since 1971.
