U3A Writing: Sin

"They walked lazily, dreamily, hand in hand through the garden...'' Margaret Hakansson writes of the most eventful walk in human history.

They walked lazily, dreamily hand in hand through the garden. The creature followed. She drew him towards the tree but he held back, reluctant. She smiled, touching his face with gentle fingers. He moved closer. The creature watched.

She stepped behind the tree, peeped round it provocatively and beckoned. He stood still, shaking his head. Returning, she moved close, closer, touching, caressing, then looking up, pointed.

He hesitated, then responding to her coaxing allowed her to raise his arm towards what was beyond her reach. The apple rolled easily from the branch into his hand. The sky darkened. The creature slithered away.
