Poetry Pleases: Summer 1999

John Bayley bares the flesh in this rattling good poem.

The sun was going down upon a tattooed shore,
And the naked flesh cried amnesty
Though the throng called out for more.

The evidence was presented openly and bare
To the entire congregation,
Who didn’t seem to care.

The jury deliberated, revulsion on their faces,
But the choices were too difficult
To satisfy Their Graces.

A decision was made after much debating,
Which pacified the protagonists
Who were fed up with waiting.

The judge was informed by the foreman juror
Of the unanimous outcome,
Which couldn’t be purer.

“Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please.
John Bayley has
The knobbliest knees.”
