Parcela 50 - “Los Parronales”:

Los Parronales is a sixty-hectare parcela (farm) in El Noviciado a village on the western side of Santiago, Chile. The village is tucked in behind the international airport and a small range of hills enclosing Chile’s populous Central Valley. It is 7 kms off the main road leading to the port of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar on the Pacific Coast 100kms away.

The farm comprises fifteen acres of vineyard, fifteen acres of woodland (eucalyptus, pine, pimiento and aromo), fifty acres of grassy pasture and a bush-covered hillside. It is ideal for walking or riding, and enjoying the local flora and fauna.

The farmhouse is a two-storied colonial style building with a deep patio and a separate stone-fronted ‘games’ room, complete with a log-burning fireplace. The garden is large and hedged with privet, which cuts down on afternoon winds and creates an oasis of peace.

A rose bed containing a fountain faces the patio, whilst a splendid magnolia tree offers cooling shade. The swimming pool has a cactus rockery on one long side and flowerbeds filled with yellow marigolds and pink wallflowers on the other.

Attractive at all seasons, the garden is especially lovely in Spring (October/November) when the trees and flowers come into first bloom with bluebells, freesia, acacia and lavender.

The main living room has windows to both front (the garden) and back. The back overlooks a new lawn towards fields, which variously hold crops of potatoes, corn and grass. In the distance, and in full view, lie the majestic snow-tipped Andes Mountains.

The farm’s resident family lives close by in a separate house, which also has a shady garden and fruit trees.

Los Parronales Writing Workshop
JAN 2005

Title: The Reality Project - Course leader - Beth Follett

“We will consider works by Neruda, Rilke, Solomon [Songs of], Chekhov and Virginia Woolf.

We will examine the vocation of the writer, the responsibility a writer has
for objectively witnessing the world and its manners, the human heart and
its morals, how a writer must know the complexities of the world even if
her characters and speakers do not.
We will ask ‘What is truth?’ and ‘How do we know it?’”

Beth Follett is the invited faculty at the Los Parronales writing holiday retreat planned for Santiago, Chile 2005.

Beth is a writer and editor, who for 8 years, has also been the full driving force behind Pedlar Press, a well-respected, independent Canadian literary publishing house.
She lives in Toronto.
