Poetry Pleases: The Meaning Of Christmas

Brian Jenkinson's poem brings a timely reminder of why we should celebrate at Christmas.

I went to town the other day
To look for Christmas cards
For posting to my many friends
And sending my regards.
But, though I searched in many shops,
The cards I liked were few.
The rest were all unsuitable
For Christmas, in my view.

I looked at pussycats and dogs
And penguins in the snow,
At many winter landscapes and
Street scenes of long ago,
Of ships tied up beside the dock
And flowers by the score,
But people did not seem to think
Of Jesus any more.

Christmas today means food and drink,
Frivolity and fun,
A time for staying at home from work
And presents by the ton.
But think of what it really means --
A time of peace and joy.
Put Christ back into Christmas and
Honour the Holy Boy.
