Kiwi Konexions: I Lost A Friend
"The silence of sitting together when no words are needed...'' Glen Taylor mourns the death of a close friend.
I lost a friend today.
No more will we sit
On the veranda at sunset,
Listening to the birds’ last song.
No more will ripples tickle
Our toes, as we walk
By the edge of the sea.
The silence of sitting together
When no words are needed.
The sound of the returning step,
The click of the key in the lock.
Memories shared.
Laughter at things remembered,
Needing no explanation.
I lost a friend today.
Cards fall through the letter box,
Saying he is just “next door”
“In another room.” “Not gone away.”
Speaking of times we’ll meet again.
I smile and thank the friends,
Sympathisers and “do-gooders.”
“She’s doing well,” they say,
Then rush away, knowing that,
One day, their turn will come.
I lost my friend today.
No more will we sip
Our cup of tea in silence,
At day’s end,
And the other room is empty,
As am I.
