U3A Writing: The Wisdom Of The Elders

With minds alive and active, we pass our wisdom on, says Ilse Erber's poem, bringing a positive message to those old enough to have wrinkles on their faces.

We exercise our bodies,
we stimulate our minds,
and yet our children think we’re old.
They see the wrinkles on our faces,
the hair that’s turning grey,
the muscles that are sagging,
the slowing of our steps.
But they cannot see that in our minds
creative thoughts are daily being born.
We’ve mostly lived upon this earth
for threescore years or more.
We now have time to draw upon
life’s lessons that we’ve learnt.
With minds alive and active
we pass our wisdom on
to younger generations
who, when they’re grey and wrinkled
will pass that wisdom on
to those who think them old.
