Peter Wintersgill introduces Marc Antoine Charpentier, music master to the Jesuits in the 17th Century.
Born
1634 in Paris.
Adolescence
Studied with Carissimi in Rome, aged about 30.
Adult Life
Worked with Moliere in Paris on La Malade Imaginaire (1673). Wrote 17 operas including Medee (1693).
He was Music Master to the Jesuits in 1684 and to St. Chapelle in 1689. He also wrote much church music, including four Te Deums, ten Magnificats and numerous motets and psalm settings.
He died 24th February, 1704, in Paris, aged 70.
