U3A Writing: Deliverance
Mike Eastwood presents a thoughtful poem for a new year.
It was 2000 years ago,
Or so the people say,
The Son of God was born to man
Upon a pile of hay.
To deliver us from evil
Was what he came to do.
He taught us by his loving heart
To God we must be true.
With miracles and stories
He went throughout the land.
He helped the poor and healed the sick
By laying on his hand.
But now we look around us
To see if we have learnt
The lessons of that bygone time,
The teachings of that Saint.
Alas the picture that we see
Is not a pretty one.
it seems the lessons that we learnt
Have nearly almost gone.
No longer do we love him.
No longer do we pray.
The only time we think of him
Is on our Christmas Day.
So search your hearts, good people,
And see if you can find
More ways to be more like him
With love for humankind.
Let’s love and help each other
And do this all year round,
Not just when the fancy takes us
Or when the carols sound.
Deliver us from evil,
O Lord our God, we pray.
Remove the pain and sorrow,
And show us all the way.
