Open Features: Pause For Thought

... I NEED Sunday. It is a day of rest. It takes me away from the rush... Ellie Braun-Haley is n enthusiastic advocate for quiet Sundays.

I was raised in a small town near the USA border. We lived in Taber , Alberta which is a bit north of Montana. I recall that Dad always had Sundays and Wednesday afternoon off as the store where he worked was closed at that time. This was true for most of the businesses in that town.

When I was growing up we didn't need a Mall to entertain us, nor did we need to shop until we dropped. Sundays were marvelous days with church attendance packed into the mornings and family time for the afternoons.

I make it a life habit to keep things that way. I remind myself on Saturday to get gas in my car, to buy needed groceries and to plan my Sunday. I love to shop, even when I don't need anything. I don't shop on Sundays however I surely do not miss it on Sundays. My Sunday has become my most favorite day of the week. I don't just reconnect with God, because actually I connect with him daily, but I do renew with him in my place of worship.

I see the entire day as an opportunity to write letters to family or to adults who are shut in and love to receive something in the mail. I try to focus on family, visiting family, phoning family, writing to family. I might dig out a painting project or just curl up with a book. I NEED Sunday. It is a day of rest. It takes me away from the rush. I utilize the time to relax, to refresh, to renew and to regain a balance that I need to handle the rest of the week.

In my religion, God tells us to rest on Sunday. He Knows what he's talking about and I've learned to take his words of wisdom. I appreciate HIS words of wisdom. It works for me!

As for keeping the economy going.... I only have so much money to spend and I can easily do that by shopping twice a week. If stores were only open four days of the week, I would still find a way to get in my shopping and have fun doing it!

I wonder if more people would discover relaxation if stores were not operating around the clock? But then I also wonder if more children would be a bit more creative about their activities if they had less television. Aha, another can of worms!! (I hear laughter) On that note have a super day and drop me a line on Sunday.
