Bradford Lad: Time To Spring Into Action

Plants are budding. Birds are singing. It's spring again. A time, says Mike Coatesworth, for humans to come out of winter "hibernation'' and start chatting to one another again over the garden fence.

The sun is shining and the sky is blue, the birds are singing happily and everywhere you look, in gardens, hedgerows and fields, there are daffodils.

Good weather could be on its way.

It’s not only the flowers and blossom in spring. Human beings behave in a similar way. They lean on garden fences, talking to neighbours. They sit outdoors, enjoying a cup of tea.

This is the time of year for local gossip as people catch upon events that have taken place during the dark winter months.

I was waiting at a bus stop in Bradford the other day when I overheard a conversation between two ladies.

‘Are you sure that you saw Mrs S---- going into the house?'' one of them asked, placing a hand over her mouth to hide her surprise.

The other lady crossed her arms and nodded. "She had a young man with her.''

Don’t ask.

Spring is also the time when a lots of people rush to the coast. They are willing to put up with exhaust fumes, traffic jams and crowds of trippers, just to get a glimpse of the sea. They spend money on things they don't really need and wait in long queues for fast food venue.

Me? I prefer to pack a picnic lunch and visit the local Ilkley moors. There I inhale unpolluted air while listening to the skylarks as they soar heavenwards.

To each his or her own.

My aunt Chrissie believed that the new year began when flowers were budding. She said that spring not only brought new life to plants. It was also the time for we humans to clear the cobwebs from our brains and begin a new cycle of life.
