Blue, Green, Red and Purple: O Come With Me

Betty Collins's defiant poem calls on young folk to blow the clarinet, to dance, sing, rhapsodise – and legless get.

O come with me and let us legless get
For we are young and they must recognise
Our youth is short and age a deadly threat

That now's the time to blow the clarinet
The time to dance and sing and rhapsodise
O come with me and let us legless get.

We know we're all entrapped in time's dragnet
And if not now, I'm sure you'll soon realise
Our youth is but short and age a deadly threat.

My friends, you squander life and primly minuet
When now's the time to dance like butterflies
O come with me and let us legless get.

Too soon our curls are flattened by some stiff hairnet
Huge cops prove heartless when they breathalyse
Our youth is short and age a deadly threat

Ah, friends, and all who spin time's rash roulette
You gather cobwebs as you amortise
Oh come with me and let us legless get
Our youth is short and age a deadly threat.
