Poetry Pleases: Five Senses At Christmas
You need all five senses to experience the best of Christmas, as June Digby reveals.
Sight
White frosty world, with glitter shimmering everywhere,
Excited children and shoppers seriously intent on purchase,
Sun low on horizon in an orange-splashed sky.
Touch
Fingers, some ungloved and icy,
Soft kisses on cool cheeks,
Hot liquid sliding down the throat
To warm parts difficult to reach.
Hearing
Leaves crunching underfoot, no birdsong in the trees,
Carol singers and Christmas songs and
Church bells calling in different keys.
Smell and Taste
Pine trees, cinnamon, sherry,
Fruit and roasting meat.
A medley of experiences
To make Yuletide complete.
