Kiwi Konexions: Peace On Earth
In this supposed time of peace and good will, Glen Taylor casts a sad eye on a world filled with ranting, raving and rage.
I've stuffed the Christmas turkey
And made the old mince pies.
I've wrapped up all the presents,
The Christmas tree's a prize.
I've helped to trim the church up,
I've lit the Advent ring
And with the Sally Army
The carols I did sing.
The food bank's overflowing
With people’s kind good will.
And Christmas shops, still open,
Are ringing up the till.
It's nearly midnight, once again,
And I'll set off to praise the name
Of Christ, who came to earth for us,
Born in a stable, with no fuss.
What's that we sing, this special night?
The angels sang it, yes, that's right.
What were their words, sung yet again?
Yes, 'Peace on Earth, Good Will to men.'
The tele's on and there I see
A massive oil slick on the sea.
A little child, wide eyed and scared,
Dying because no-one cared.
And they're dropping bombs on Bethlehem
They've started all that up again.
The streets are full of screaming men,
Women and children die again.
Tonight there'll be no prayers there,
The place where he did first appear
Perhaps some lonely monk might pray,
But not the pilgrims, they're away.
This world of ours is full of rage
All over people rant and rave.
They fight and squabble, bawl and shout,
And forget what it is all about.
And so I wonder, as I wait,
Of all our Lord did undertake.
Why can't we listen to his word?
Why do we still in wars partake ?
Perhaps he's watching from on high,
Perhaps he knows one day we'll try?
If not, why did he send his son?
Born for us in Bethlehem.
But now I hear our church bells ring
And I must hurry out to sing,
‘Peace on Earth, Good Will to men’
While they drop bombs on Bethlehem.
