Here's Alison: Dance On

Alison Ross's poem tells of a young woman who lost her baby. It died shortly after being born. She and her husand, grief-stricken, turned their sorrows inwards. Each felt abandoned by the other. Then one day he gave a lift to a young woman who was hitchhiking. She was skilled in he art of listening...

Dance on my Baby’s ashes
While you can
For if he hadn’t died
You wouldn’t have my man.

Dance on my Baby’s ashes
Feel my pain
And know this will never
Be your gain.

We needed time
To grieve
We didn’t need you
there, to thieve.

I lost my son; I lost my man
I hope it haunts you
Till you understand.

Yes dance on my Baby’s ashes
And know my sorrows
For they will live within me
In all of my tomorrows.
