Poetry Pleases: Flame-Lily

Masimba Biriwasha believes that the function of an artist is to reveal an inner divine realm. This essential divinity is tragically submerged in humanity. To ignore this divine impulse is to destoy one's potential for achieving authentic selfhood and psychological maturity.

His poem most satisfyingly proves his point.

O, Flame-Lily

Storm me with your flames.
And open pathways in me
That I knew not existed.

Now, flame lily
Go ahead and set ablaze the lightning
Of my soul's bloom.

Unfold my heart's petals,
With your smile that is
As soft as October’s dew.
