The sun is up. The birds are singing. The day has begun. Sally's special day has begun.

Today is the day Sally is allowed to answer the telephone and take important messages for the very first time.

Sally jumps out of bed, gets dressed and runs down the hallway to her mum.

"Hello, Mum, has the telephone rung yet?" Sally asks.

"No, Sally," says Mum, "the telephone hasn't rung yet. Be patient, I'm sure it will soon."

Sally has her breakfast and decides to go and play in her room. If she keeps the door open, Sally is sure she will hear the telephone if it rings.

Lunch-time comes and goes, but still the telephone has not rung. Sally is tired of playing in her bedroom.

"Sally, why don't you play outside?" asks her mum.

"I won't hear if the telephone rings," says Sally.

"I'll come and get you if it does," promises her mum.

Sally agrees, picks up her skipping rope and walks outside. After skipping, Sally plays in her sandpit.

Soon the sun starts to go down and it becomes too chilly to play outside. "Sally, it's getting cold, come inside now please," calls mum.

Sally hops out of the sandpit, brushes her clothes and starts to walk inside.

"Oh, Mum, the telephone is never going to ring," sighs Sally. With her head hanging low, Sally walks slowly to her room.

Watching Sally walk to her room, mum has an idea.

Sally picks out a jumper to put on and just as she is pulling it over her head, the telephone rings.

Sally is so excited, she pulls her jumper on as quickly as she can and runs down the hallway.

"Mum, Mum, the telephone is ringing. I finally get to say what I've been practising," Sally cries.

Sally's mum looks on, with a big smile on her face, at Sally's excitement.

Sally picks up the telephone. "Hello, this is Sally speaking," she says proudly.

"Hello, Sally," says a familiar voice.

"Daddy, it's you. Did I sound alright?" Sally asks.

"Yes, darling, you sounded very grown up," says her dad.

Sally blushes and giggles. "Oh, Daddy, I have been waiting for the phone to ring all day."

Sally and her dad talk for a little while longer. Sally tells her dad about her day and Sally's dad tells her about his day at work.

Sally's mum sits in the kitchen, sipping her cup of tea. She is smiling to herself. Sally's day has been special after all.
