Yorkshire Dialect: Gettin' Away fra Awl th' Electioneerin'
At a time when Britain has a new Prime Minister Mike Shaw's dialect tale recalls an earlier election.
"Well, Ah see they're at it lahke cats and dogs already," sed yar Ethel after t' Prime Minister put us aat on us misery an' called th' election.
"Aye, it wer abaat tahme 'at they gate started," Ah replahd. "It wer gettin' jtist lahke t' phoney war i' 1939."
Ethel looked up fra reeadin' t' paper an' sed i' yar neck o' t' woods th' election wer baan ter be war ner usual. "We'n getten sooa monny candidates 'at t' vooatin' slip'll be mooar lahke a roll o' toilet paper," shoo sed. "Ther's fahve on 'em 'at Ah know of straight off, an' Ah wouldn't be capped if we dooan't get some moar afooar pollin' day.
"Ah dooan't know wheer some on 'em get ther brass throo fer t' deposit, an' they know afooar they start 'at they're baand ter looise it," shoo chuntered. "It seeams lahke it's nowt but a game ter them sooa they can 'ave some fun fer a month or sooa."
Ah puffed away at mi pahpe an' telled 'er it wer lahke a game i' mooar ways ner one. "It gi'es awl thees politicians a chance ter talk ther yeds off. And they send aat sooa monny leeaflets it's just lahke a paper chase," Ah sed.
"Th' ooanly gooid thing is 'at awl bein' well we shan't be 'avin' another
fer fahve yeears," replahd Ethel. "It'll be on telly, t' wahreless an' in t' papers till we're chock fed up," shoo sed. "We'll nooan be able ter get away fra it, choose aah we trah."
"Well, An reckon tha'r wrang theer," Ah telled 'er. "Ah think Ah've fun a way raand that. Me an' Jack Bamforth wer talkin' it ovver last neet an' we came up wi' an idea ter get away from awl th' electioneerin'.
"We're thinkin' o' tekkin' us 'ook ter live in a tent on Pule. Ah reckon even t' daftest politician'll nooan gooa chasin' us up theer!"
