Anticipation.

Water stands solid in barrels.
Icicles hang from eaves.
Birds perch, fluffed, on hoar-rimmed lines.
Bare trees sketch dark branches
Against leaden skies, waiting,
As the first green spear of spring
Forces its way towards the light.
