One of Alison Ross's good friends struggled with deafness for years. This poem is about the first time that Ray became aware of what the future held in store for him.
Frightened
I clutched the seashell
To my ear
Straining
For the sounds of sea!
While in my mind’s eye
I stood
Watching it stretch
To infinity!
There was no sound,
The shell was mute!
Terror held my body
My feet took root
And in that minute second
The truth was clear
The seashell roared
And deaf
I could not hear!
