Here's Alison: An Aussie In Beijing

Chicken can be very tasty. But chicken feet? Alison Ross's poem tells of an Aussie who was confronted by an unwelcomed dish.

From the land of OZ he went to see
Chinese City ‘cross the sea

As I recall, ‘twas called Beijing
Where food like ours is seldom seen

Out to dine with Chinese bloke
He prayed for chicken (boiled with yolk)

He really didn’t care to eat
Tasty dish of chicken feet

Chinese stomach lined with lead
"You like chicken feet?'' he said

The Aussie longed to board his plane
And head for Aussie land again

To vegs fruit and beef in stews
Ice-cream and Pavs and BBQs

He told me all, upon the phone
Trying to disguise his groan

He hadn’t cared to make a fuss
But oh how he wished they ate like us!
