North American Dreaming: Blind

William Burkholder's poem suggests that the poet's task is to open eyes which perhaps would prefer to remain closed.

Contrived comfort.

When eyes are closed
To a world of violence.

When apathy rules
Why then should I care?

I live,
I breathe,
I cry,
I bleed.

O that my eyes could be closed,

Alas however, They remain open.

Thus the verse,
The thought,
The attempt,

To open yours.
