North American Dreaming: Purple Hearts

Purple hearts beating,
they beat for us,
and what do our hearts
think of them?

William Burkholder muses on whether we pay our dues to those who risk their lives for us.

Purple hearts beating
in the halls,
the walls,
on the floors,
of Walter Reed.
Why do we not hear them?

Purple hearts beating
damaged fodder
of cannon’s muzzle;
dismantled by high ideal,
and bayonet mindset.

Politico stupido's,
ranting at the color of paint on the walls,
photo ops for the weak minded,
non combatant instigators,
in blue suits and red ties.

Purple hearts beating;
I can hear them pounding,
I can see them bleeding,
bleeding,
Red, White, and Blue.

Purple hearts beating,
they beat for us,
and what do our hearts
think of them?
