Open Features: Desiree Artot

Peter Wintersgill introduces us to Desiree Artot who made her Paris debut in Meyerbeer's Le Prophete.

21 July, 1835, in Paris.

Adolescence
Desiree Artot studied with Pauline Viadot Garcia in Paris.

Adult life
Her Paris debut was in Meyerbeer's Le Prophete in 1858. She sang Rosina in the Barber of Seville & Leonora in II Trovatore.

In 1869 she married the Spanish baritone Mariano Padilla y Ramos, with whom she often sang. Their daughter Lola sang Octavia in the first Berlin performance of Der Rosenkavalier. Most of her career was spent in Germany.

She died on 3 April, 1907, in Berlin, aged 72.
