Poetry Pleases: June
Brian Jenkinson celebrates his favourite month.
Now bird songs drown the ear,
Echo down each woodland ride.
Insects drone, drowsy in sedge
By the steam’s side.
Warm breezes brush the cheek.
Through rich grass sleek cattle wade
To the dark line of the hedge,
Seeking its shade.
Now green flames burn the eye,
As bright leaves dance in the sun.
And flowers start up from the earth,
For June’s begun.
