Out of the corner of her eye she saw something black. Something big and black. She turned quickly and there it was, staring at her with bright shining eyes. Big: black: menacing.
She thought she’d seen a ghost, but a ghost would be safe. Maybe this ghost was different – it looked dangerous and she tried to approach it thinking to defuse the situation, but it moved away from her.
Following the chimera into the sitting room she gasped in relief. Walking quickly in front of her was a beautiful, well-groomed black poodle bewildered by her raised voice following him from the unfamiliar kitchen into the living room. From the next unit a faint whistling could be heard. Obedient as always, the dog followed the signal. As instructed, he rejoined his owners and jumped into the visitor’s car.
“Heavens, he gave me a fright!” she told her neighbours. “I thought I’d seen a ghost, and what’s more it was a BLACK GHOST. I thought it was something quite different!”
“I can imagine how you must have felt. Sorry you were frightened,” rejoined her friend Millie. “He’s such a lovely dog. His name’s Patchouli and he’s my son’s newest love. And he’s far better than the present one, if you ask my opinion,” she added in an undertone that nobody seemed to hear.
Driving out, their headlights illuminated the prominent sign at the gate reading “NO ANIMALS ALLOWED”, but gently patting Patchouli, he smiled at the woman by his side before tenderly clasping her hand.
