Fast Fiction: Ramblers

So what thoughts pass through the minds of those ramblers who go trudging through the beautiful countryside?

There were eight of them in the group, six men and two women. They met every other Sunday at the corner of Palgrave Street.

Having greeted each other, they straggled to a high point on the downs, where they sat, ate their sandwiches and drank coffee.

'This makes me want to cry out with joy,' said Ruby.

'I'd like to make you cry out with joy,' thought Tom.

'Drawing attention to herself again,' thought Ida.

'Sometimes I don't want to go home again,' said Tom.

'He'd like me to go home with him,' thought Ruby.

'He hasn't much to look forward to,' thought Ida.

'My husband used to bring me up here,' said Ida.

'And how many others as well?' thought Tom.

'Please, spare us the details,' thought Ruby.

Back in town, they began to disperse.

'See you next time,' said Ruby.

'One day, I'll invite her to my place,' thought Tom.

'I wish Ruby would join another group,' thought Ida. 'Then I'd have all the men to myself.. . and that would suit me down to the ground . . . Oh, ha, ha, that's not quite what I meant.'
