Christmas Every Week: Christmas Orders

Arnold Kellett's poem expresses a yearning for the days when Christmas presents were surprises.

A mother now stands with her bold little boy
In front of a Christmas shop-window display,
As he loftily points to each gleaming new toy
With which he fancies he'd like to play;
'I want one o' those! And the other, as well
No! That one you promised me, right at the back'
And he greedily adds to his list of desires
Enough to inflate a whole Santa Claus sack . . .
Oh, how far we've come from the stockinged surprise
And the secrets that thrilled and would richly reward us;
The old folks may smile, but there's shock in their eyes:
A little lad giving his Christmas orders!
