Peter Wintersgill outlines the life of French singer Lily Pons, who made her opera debut as Delibes' Lakme.

12th. April 1898 in Draguignan, France.

Adult life
Studied at Paris Conservatoire. Opera debut as Delibes' Lakme at Mullhouse 1928, New York Met debut as Donizetti' s Lucia 1931, singing there till 1959, singing the roles of Verdi's Gilda & Bellini's Amina. Covent Garden debut as Rosina 1935. She sang in many countries of the world, & made films. She married Andre Kostelanetz, the Russian conductor in 1938. Her voice was fresh, agile & high pitched.
She died 13th. February 1976 in Dallas Texas aged 77.
