Peter Wintersgill introduces us to the singer Anthony Rolfe Johnson.
Born
5th. November 1940 in Tackley, Oxfordshire.
Adult life
He started life as a farmer, but took up singing in 1967, when he studied at G.S.M. & made his debut at Glyndebourne. He later sang far E.N.O., W.N.O. &English Music Theatre, chiefly in Mozart roles, also as Monteverdi's Orpheus. He has also sung Lensky (Netherlands Opera) & Ashenbach (Scottish Opera).
Notable for his elegant & lyrical singing, he is chiefly known for his Mozart & Handel roles. He also sings in lieder and oratorio, eg Dream of Gerontius, Bach Passions etc.
