About Our Words: Arnold Kellett

Celia Douthwaite recalls the first time she met Arnold Kellett, Yorkshire dialect expert and the author of a number of books.

Arnold's Yorkshire dialect version of the Gospels, Ee By Gum Lord!, appears in Open Writing, as does his Christmas poems under the title Christmas Every Week.

I first met Arnold Kellett as a young girl of 13 in my second year at King James Grammer School Knaresborough and he attempted to teach a class French which I found to be great and Arnold an inspiration. He was a very good teacher and in later years I have followed his writings and enjoyed all the wit and dialect, easier to read alone than to read aloud, but understood.
