At the beginning of February, late in the afternoon, Muriel let herself into no. 13 and leant against the closed door for a few moments, savouring the silence.

“Cyril,” she shouted, “I’ll be along in a minute.”

At a leisurely pace she took off her coat and scarf, dropped them on the floor and made her way through the kitchen. As the workshop lights flickered on she pressed one of the buttons on the music control panel.

Louis Armstrong’s Stompin’ at the Savoy filled the room.

She chuckled as the double doors of one wall cupboard opened at her touch.

On the highest shelf a new label gleamed. Head it said. She cast her eyes along a row of carefully sealed specimen jars and grimaced at the lingering smell of formaldehyde.
Eye (l.), Eye (r.), Ear (l.), Ear (r.), Scalp, Moustache (l. & r.) …

The lower shelves held larger jars.

She smiled as she remembered a quotation which had been placed on the wall of the main operating theatre at the Royal General.

A place for everything, and everything in its place

Cyril would certainly have approved.
