'What do you have in mind for the next few days?' she said.

'Oh, visits to places of, er, interest,' he said.

'Yes, that should be fun ... And right now?'

'Well, we could take a stroll on the pier.'

'And after that?'

'Morning coffee in the hotel, perhaps?'

'And after that?'

'Hm, we could do the crossword for a while, until lunch - or until it's time for pre-lunch drinks.'

'Oh, I see,' she said . . . 'Now you won't mind me saying this, will you, but I'd always assumed that going on holiday with one's illicit lover would be full of thrills and mysteries.'

'Well, yes, I'm sorry ... but you know I'm not very imaginative. I'm not a literary type like some of your previous, er - '

'Oh, don't be upset. I'm not really criticising you. After all, I took to you because you weren't all ego and self-conceit.'

'Hm, like someone in particular?'

'Well, yes, but nobody you're likely to know ... the bastard ... Now, let's go for that stroll on the pier, shall we?' She hugged him.

'Ah,' he said, 'if only my wife could see me now.'
