'It's just a thought,' said Hector Scatte MP, after they'd been at the party for ten minutes, 'but would you care to spend the night with my wife?'

'Oh, I'd love to,' gushed young Harris, a researcher.

'Ha, ha, no, no. I'd better rephrase that.'

'Yes,' said the exquisite Mrs Scatte, 'you'd better. . . although ..."

'Although what?'

'Oh, nothing, darling. Just get on with your rephrasing.'

Then she thought, 'God, I'm bored.'

'Emma Bovary was bored,’ said young Harris.

'How did you know what I was thinking? asked Mrs Scatte.

'Hm, pure instinct,' said young Harris, blushing.

'Well, now,' said Scatte, 'what I meant to say was, would you care to take care of my wife for the rest of the evening while I attend to some rather urgent business that has cropped - ?'

'You mean, just stay at her side?' asked young Harris, still blushing.

That's about it,' said Scatte, putting his glass down. 'Yes, protect her, fend off the predators . .. Bye, darling,' he said to his wife, 'be good, won't you?'

'I never get the chance not to be,’ she thought.

'When you ADMITTED you were bored -' young Harris began.

'Oh, god,' she thought.

' - what exactly did you mean?' young Harris went on.

His eyes became moist as he gazed at her.

'He thinks he's going to score,' she thought.

'Yes, you're going to score,' she said into his hot face.
