Christmas Every Week: A Very Special Jew

During the census ordered by Caesar Augustus did some Roman soldier on duty in Bethlehem record the birth of Jesus?

Arnold Kellett suggests in this poem an answer to that question.

Another birth,
Another brat,
Another mouth to feed!

It's 'ard to tell
Just who's begat,
The way these blighters breed!
Now 'ere's a lass from Nazareth -
Too poor to rent a bed:
Her baby's in this cattle-trough,
With straw beneath 'is 'ead .. .
Oh add 'im to the census list,
Another bloomin' Jew . . .

If I were Caesar back in Rome
I know what I would do:
I'd crucify the blinkin' lot -
Still... he's a bonny little lad;
This one might be different
And crucifixion's bad

I didn't mean it, little man,
We'd not do that to you -
We'll note it on the census form:
A Very Special Jew.
