Don’t Tell Me That You Love Me
Steph Spiers' poem tells of doomed love.
Don’t tell me that you love me.
Don’t burden me with your dreams.
Don’t waste years of longing,
in wakeful nights and ardent schemes,
For I am already gone beyond.
I might glow with health and hearty seem,
and full of life appear,
the life and soul of every silly party,
‘tis but a trick of the light.
A wilful, wishful dream.
For I am but an empty shell,
grief’s hammer dashed to smithereens
I’ve been heart broke for ten years long.
Beneath, no feelings lie.
Go! Find another to share your song.
For I cannot wait to die.
