About Our Words: Christmas, 1924

A wry rhyme written by Ron Pataky reminded John Kilburn, Easingwold, North Yorkshire, of a Thomas Hardy quatrain.

John writes:

Ron Pataky's poem reminds me of Thomas Hardy's well-known quatrain, entitled simply "Christmas, 1924.\".

"Peace upon earth!' was said. We sing it,
And pay a million priests to bring it.
After two thousand years of mass
We 've got as far as poison-gas."
