Fast Fiction: Giving

Richard Mallinson's tale makes you wonder whether or not generosity is appreciated.

'Come in, keep your voice down.'

'I haven't spoken yet.'

'Shssh ... in here ... sit down.'

'Where is he?'

'Upstairs, fast asleep, flat out.'

'Drunk?'

'As usual.'

'What a slob.'

'Never mind him . . . what have you brought me?'

'Wine, and cigarettes - and here's £20.'

'Hey, what's the £20 for?'

'Anything you like ... but don't let him get it.'

'No, I'll put it away . . . Why are you being so kind to me?'

'Well, I am a Christian, after all.'

'Yes, but -'

'Has he gone?'

'Well, he's not under the table, is he?'

'Don't get lippy with me ... What did he bring this time?'

'Only wine and cigs.'

'Don't lie. He gave you cash, didn't he? Come on, hand it over.'

'No, it's mine. He said to keep it away from you.'

'Oh, did he now? Well, what does he know about anything, the smug bastard? . . . Yeah, I'd be a Christian if I could afford it.'
