About Our Words: Pansion

A mention of the word "pansion'' in an artiucle by John Merchant about his mother's pantry attracted the attention of Janet Hirst from Yorkshire

Janet writes:

Last week my brother had been renovating a greenhouse for my father who is 92 but still enjoys gardening. He found a large earthenware pot which my father told us was a panshion. He said my mother had used the panshion to bake bread and he reckoned it would be at least 70 years old, probably more. I had never heard the word so I Googled it and this brought up your article. I found it fascinating and wondered in which part of the UK the author was brought up? My mother came from a farming family and lived in Yorkshire south of Sheffield.

Some of the other recollections brought back memories for me too - my Grandma used to make ginger beer and elderflower "champagne" to take to my Grandad and uncles working out in the fields.

Thank you for your interesting story.
