Peter Wintersgill outlines the career of Caroline Unger who sang in the first performances of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Ninth Symphony.

Adolescence
Studied in Milan and Vienna (with Vogl).

Adult life
Opera debut 1821 as Dorabella in Cosi fan Tutti. She sang in the premiere of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Ninth Symphony, turning the deaf composer around so that he could see the audience applauding. She created the roles of Donizetti's Parisina and Belisario, also Bellini's La Straniera and Pacini's Niobe. Paris debut 1833, winning high praise from Rossini. She retired after getting married in 1841.

She died 23rd March 1877 in Florence aged 73.
