Christmas Every Week: Jehovah’s Christmas
Arnold Kellett’s poem emphases the need to preserve the celebration and the message of Christmas.
Jehovah’s ChristStrange Jehovah's Witness:
Christ without a Christmas!
But, worse, the world enticed
By Christmas without Christ!
Winter solstice revels
Still favour festive devils:
The gods of pagan Yule,
The wild Lords of Misrule,
The jolly drunken drivers
Embracing their survivors. ..
Scenes where pagan Rome
Would feel so much at home,
Where many Christians might
Say the Witnesses are right!
And yet the heathen basis
Provides a rare oasis,
Where humans winter-weary
Hear carols ever-cheery,
Their news unique: a birth
To save the woeful earth ...
Though Christ is ostracised,
The world's evangelised,
Offered a brand new start:
This Child can touch the heart...
Then Christmas let us keep;
The time is growing shorter:
Don't throw this Baby out
With the modernised,
Mythologised,
Re-paganised,
Commercialised,
Bath water.
