Christmas Every Week: A Christmas Calvary

Do you see holly as a crown of thorns?

Arnold Kellett’s poem firmly reminds us of the true message of Christmas.

Jesus Christ is crucified
Every Christmas Day;
The Saturnalian soldiers mock:
'You're not a King!' they say;
With holly as his Crown of Thorns,
And tinsel round his wrists,
They flog with Christmas cracker lash
And punch with pudding fists;
With mistletoe for Judas kiss,
And Pilate's clean-washed hands,
They now can do away with him,
And in all Christian lands
They string him up on Christmas trees,
And go their festive way -
Those, I mean, without a thought
Of who was born today . ..
A twisted irony of time,
Our Merry Christmas kills:
For if we fail to care and give
And act out our good wills,
And let this Jesus touch our hearts,
Then, once again, he'll be
The King they snubbed as they passed by -
A Christmas Calvary.
