Ratcatcher: Chapter 49

...'Are you certain?' Colonel Danby said. 'Ah, I see. Kentish's friends from over the water will be calling to see him. What happens then?'

'Kentish will pay them in kind,' I said....

Colin Dunne continues his thrilling tale of undercover work.

Crocker was good. Damned good. He was outraged. He was insulted. He was unquestionably sincere.

The leak was a fabrication and a scandal. He had never intended making any declaration in support of the IRA or of their aims. He was as resolutely and fervently opposed to them as he always had been, and he backed to the hilt the gallant and unswerving efforts of our security forces.

There was plenty more of that sort of stuff but I didn't want to hear it.

'Aren't you staying?' Danby asked, when I stood up.

'No, that should do the trick,' I said.

Then the door opened and Charles was standing there, was holding a canvas suitcase. If the scale had been different, he could've been a little boy going to stay with his granny.

'I packed everything you said, father. Is this the gentleman I have to go with?'

'Yes Charles, Mr Hussy will look after you. Do what he says, there's a good fellow.'

He put down the bag and held out his hand.

'Good afternoon, sir...'

'I'm sorry Charles,' I said. 'I can't take you just now. You stay here with your father and I'll let you know. Okay?'

He stood frowning, looking from one to the other.

'Are you certain?' Colonel Danby said. 'Ah, I see. Kentish's friends from over the water will be calling to see him. What happens then?'

'Kentish will pay them in kind,' I said.
