'A statement needs to be made,' said Venner.

'Agreed, but who's going to - ?' asked Gratty.

'Not me,' said Krulling.

'Nor I,' said Lander.

'So that brings it back to me, then,' said Venner. 'The usual story, isn't it? If anything nasty needs to be done it always ends up with me, or I end up with it.'

'Don't feel sorry for yourself,' said Dee Carr. 'You're the only one among us capable of finding the right words and putting them over with sensitivity.'

'Well, thank you for that, Dee, but I'm not sure my supposed skills in this line will really soften the blow.'

'Oh, you're far too modest,' Dee said.

'How did it go at work today? asked Venner's wife.

'So-so . . . What's for dinner? I'll have a drink first.'

'So-so? Is that the best you can do? I bet you don't talk like that at work, do you? Come here . . .'

'Hm, that was nice . . . But you didn't answer my question.'

What question?'

'What's for dinner?'

'What do you think's for flaming dinner? It's Friday, isn't it?'

'Hm, this is excellent scotch ... I must order another bottle.'

'Oh, Dee Carr rang. Said they were all very proud of you and wanted me to know. Nice of her, wasn't it? Now, just relax with your drink while I see to the ... I reckon she's a bit sweet on you, don't you? . . . Nearly 60, isn't she?'
