Away With Worry: The Patience Of Julie

Angela Black pays tribute to a loyal amanuensis.

Julie, Julie what a friend
She fulfills my needs which never end
She scans my poetry and my verse
Sometimes too laboured, sometimes too terse

She deciphers the words I scribble at speed
And leaves out some with the comment "No need''
Too many words she knows is a fault
She's learnt that from me, when to say "halt''

Has it got rhythm, does it scan
Is there anything we should ban
She acts as a censor "What do you thin?
Have I gone too far and over the brink?''

"No,'' she might say "but don't show your mother
Your childern, okay, they are no bother.''
"This is the end, I'm writing no more.''
"Yes,'' says she "I've heard that before.''

She gives me her all, and that without measure
Julie, Julie - what a treasure.
